Chancellor’s Great Court
The African Women Studies Centre of the University of Nairobi participated in the annual Nairobi Innovation week which was held from 1st to 5th August at the Chancellor’s Great Court. The Innovation Week was officially opened by H.E President Uhuru Kenyatta, the President of the Republic of Kenya. The AWSC exhibited a documentary “The Untold Story of The African Liberation Struggle” which tells the story of the role played by selected African Women Freedom Fighters who gave of themselves in the fight for their identity, their territory and their land. The documentary is part of the innovation from AWSC to tell the story of the role played by women in liberation struggle and whose voices are either muted or whose story and role is not fully appreciated.
When the President visited the AWSC Stand at the exhibition, he was keen to see what the documentary was all about prompting his entourage to make a stop in the stand and watch the video. The documentary excited the president who asked a few questions on the same. The president later requested for a copy of the documentary to be delivered to his office through the Chancellor of the University of Nairobi. Under the leadership of the Director AWSC, Prof. Wanjiku Mukabi Kabira, the Centre teamed up with School of Journalism and Department of Literature and reworked the documentary, a copy of which was sent to The President through the office of the Chancellor.
