The African Women’s Studies Centre under its Amkeni Wakenya Project - Phase II carried out a Civic Education exercise on voting procedure prior to the 4th March 2013 General elections. The exercise was conducted in collaboration with the IEBC – Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission. Materials (booklets and posters) on voting procedure as well as scenario building ahead of Kenya’s March 2013 elections were distributed. One-on-one education sessions on the voting procedure were conducted. University students, members of staff and the general public attended the three day activity which was carried out on 28th February – 2nd March 2013 at the Great Court, Main Campus, University of Nairobi.
After over 20 years of experience in gender/women studies in Kenyan universities, African Women’s Studies Centre (AWSC), University of Nairobi thought it would be important to reflect on experiences, challenges and opportunities in the discourse on African women in scholarship. Therefore, AWSC held a colloquium on 27th August, 2015 University of Nairobi Main Campus during which scholars in this discourse presented papers that address these issues.
The colloquium focused on two broad areas:
1.Theoretical perspectives in the teaching of African women in the various discipline and challenges faced in the process.
2.The linkage between scholarship in African women and the women’s movements/struggle in Kenya and other African countries: Challenges and Opportunities.
The papers presented will be reviewed and published in Pathways to African Feminism and Development, Journal of African Women’s Studies Centre and other scholarly journals.

The African Women’s Studies Centre and the Department of Literature, organized for the “Kenyans for Peace” event.
Guests were taken through the journey that culminated into Forum 85 in Kenya that hosted over 4,000 women from all over the world. The Conference which was held at the University of Nairobi was given the mandate to seek new ways to overcome the obstacles to achieving the decade's goals which were equality, development and peace. At that time, Dr. Gachukia was the Head of the Department of Literature and the Chairperson of the Women’s forum in Nairobi.
Dr. Eddah Gachukia, one of Kenya’s longest serving and respected educationist, was the Guest of Honour during the relocation ceremony of the White Peace Pillar from Kongi’s Square to the Great Court, outside Education Building, Main Campus. The Peace Pillar was planted in 1985 by delegates during the 3rd United Nations Decade Conference for Women held in Nairobi as a symbolic reminder of the need to be peaceful. The Peace Pillar was being relocated to pave way for the commencement of construction of the proposed university towers.
