EVALUATING IMPACTS OF GENDER INTEGRATION ON AGRICULTURE AND FOOD SECURITY OUTCOMES

In partnership with CARE international and Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO) ,The African Women Studies Centre(AWSC) of the University of Nairobi is carrying out multi-disciplinary study on  Evaluating Impacts of Gender Integration on Agriculture and Food Security Outcomes.The research  will focus on comparison of differential outcomes in gender equality and empowerment, food and nutrition security, and economic well-being while exploring the women’s empowerment pathways of change (such as control over resources, access to information and inputs, men’s and women’s sensitization and critical consciousness, and intra-household resource allocation.

 The study aims to contribute to bridging a notable knowledge gap in the literature on gender in the agriculture sector. The overall objective of this study is to contribute to women’s agricultural productivity, incomes, household food and nutrition security, and gender equality through a gender transformative Farmer Filed Business School (FFBS) compared to the standard, gender-neutral Farmer Field School (FFS). The study will be carried out in Kinangop Sub-County, Nyandarua County and will focus on mainly two agricultural value chains namely; Irish potato and garden peas.

In regard to this, AWSC invites application for one Master of Arts and one Masters of Economics research scholarships in this project. The successful candidates who meet the eligibility criteria the research involves following up the progress the farmers are making but all research needs including data analysis will be supported. This scholarship will be support for the project or MA thesis but students can also do term papers using the research data.

Eligibility criteria

The successful applicant must:

  1. Be a registered MA Student at the University of Nairobi at African Women Studies Centre or School of Economics due for the 2019 graduation
  2. Have obtained a minimum of Second Class Honours, upper division degree from a recognized university
  3. Have demonstrated interest in Food Security and Gender Issues
  4. Be familiar with qualitative research methodology
  5. Have knowledge in Econometrics(those from School of Economics)
